Who is St Patrick? 
Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain and  was a Christian missionary that lived during the fifth century. He is the primary patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Around age 16, he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave.  He escaped 6  years later and but later returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop, where he was credited with bringing Christianity to the people there.  In two letters that survive him, he writes that his  faith grew in captivity, and that he prayed daily.

Why is St Patrick’s Day on March 17?

March 17 is believed to be St Patrick’s date of death.

What’s with the shamrock?
Legend says that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.  The three-leafed plant, represented the Christian teaching of three persons in one God. This is believed to be the main reason that shamrocks are a central symbol for St Patrick’s Day.  Since very early times, the Irish have considered shamrocks as good-luck symbols and that tradition has now been adapted by many nationalities.

What about the leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold?
The celtic mythology of pre-Christian Ireland did not entirely survive the conversion to Christianity. The Leprechauns are a type of “fairy” from Old Irish Mythology. It was said that they spend all their time making shoes and cleaning shoes, while  storing all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Originally,  leprechauns had a different appearance depending on where in Ireland they were found. In most cases they were pictured wearing RED  suits and not the traditional color known today as GREEN.

Why do I have to wear green to avoid being pinched?
Actually the original color of St Patrick’s Day was BLUE, not green! The color green became used as a symbol for Ireland in the 19th century. It is said that wearing the color green especially on St Patrick’s Day, brings good luck. It also is considered an act of paying tribute to Ireland. Many years ago, children of Ireland began pinching those who forgot to wear green on the holiday and that tradition is still practiced worldwide today.

Fun ways to celebrate St Patrick’s Day: 

• Parades- The first parade held to honor St. Patrick’s Day took place in the USA, on March 17, 1762.
  
• Corned Beef & Cabbage:  Thousands gather with their loved ones on St. Patrick’s Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage, to bring good luck for the next year.  Some choose the newer tradition of bacon and cabbage because it is cheaper.
• Set a Leprechaun Trap: There is a really cute one HERE
• Fill the kids shoes with treats: We do this one! A leprechaun sneaks in at night and fills their shoes with goodies.
• Leprechaun Mischief: You can find a long list of tricks if you google them. There are some cute ones HERE.
• Fun Recipes:  There are so many delicious and fun recipes that you can turn green!
